Best Bass Fishing Baits for the Harris Chain of Lakes
Share
The Harris Chain of Lakes offers nearly every type of Florida bass cover: hydrilla, lily pads, docks, canals, shell and offshore breaks. Success comes from adjusting to water movement, vegetation and the position of the fish rather than relying on one bait all day.
1. Urchin Baits Around Docks and Grass
An urchin bait is a strong choice when fish are pressured. Skip the 20mm Sinking Kraken beneath docks and watch the line as it falls. Around shallow grass, use the 19mm floating Kraken to keep the bait above vegetation.
2. Chatterbaits Along Hydrilla
Cast a bladed jig parallel to hydrilla edges or across submerged grass. Let it contact vegetation, then snap it free. A 3/8- or 1/2-ounce American Bait & Tackle Company Chatter Bait is a useful starting point when wind or cloud cover encourages bass to chase.
3. Texas Rigs in Lily Pads
Pitch a Texas-rigged soft plastic beside pad stems and into open pockets. Use enough weight to enter the cover while keeping the fall controlled. The larger 25mm Kraken Bug gives bass a noticeable target in thick vegetation.
4. Swim Jigs Around Pads and Reeds
A weedless swim jig can be worked through shallow cover where treble-hook baits struggle. Swim it steadily, then pause beside isolated pads, reeds or dock corners.
5. Carolina Rigs on Offshore Structure
Use a Carolina rig on points, drops, shell beds and outside grass. Drag the weight slowly and stop at every change in bottom composition. A floating urchin rises behind the weight; a sinking urchin remains closer to bottom.
6. Jigs Around Docks and Hard Bottom
Skip a compact jig beneath docks or drag a football-style jig across harder bottom. The American Bait & Tackle Company Jig Collection includes swim, skip and football styles for different areas of the chain.
Color Selection
Green pumpkin is a reliable natural choice. Junebug and black create contrast in stained water and shade. White, shad and brighter colors are useful when bass are feeding aggressively or water clarity calls for more visibility.
A Simple Harris Chain Game Plan
- Start around shallow grass, pads or docks early.
- Use a moving bait to locate active fish.
- Follow with a sinking urchin when bass miss or stop chasing.
- Move toward outside grass, shell and deeper structure as conditions change.
The most important adjustment is depth. Keep both the floating 19mm Kraken and 20mm Sinking Kraken ready so you can target fish above the grass or below the surface without rebuilding your entire setup.
