How to Fish Hydrilla

How to Fish Hydrilla for Largemouth Bass

Hydrilla gives largemouth bass oxygen, shade and ambush cover. The challenge is identifying the productive part of the grass and choosing a bait that reaches the fish without constantly fouling.

Find the Best Hydrilla First

Look for points, inside turns, outside edges, holes, isolated clumps and places where two types of cover meet. Bass often use a clean edge or small irregularity instead of an endless uniform stretch.

1. Use a Chatterbait to Cover Water

Cast a American Bait & Tackle Company Chatter Bait across submerged hydrilla and retrieve it fast enough to stay above the grass. When the bait touches vegetation, snap it free and be prepared for a strike.

2. Drop a Sinking Urchin Into Holes

The 20mm Sinking Kraken falls without a separate weight, creating a clean presentation in open pockets. Let it sink on a semi-slack line, watch for movement, then lift it gently and allow another fall.

3. Texas Rig the Thickest Cover

Use a weedless Texas rig when grass becomes dense. Peg the weight so it stays with the bait. A compact 19mm profile slips through smaller openings, while the 25mm Kraken gives bass a larger target.

4. Swim a Jig Along the Edge

A weedless swim jig moves through grass efficiently. Keep it just above the hydrilla, pause beside points and clumps, and change retrieve speed until fish respond.

5. Fish Above Shallow Grass

Use the 19mm floating Kraken weightless when hydrilla grows near the surface. Small twitches and long pauses let the bait remain above vegetation instead of burying into it.

Line and Tackle

Use stronger line around dense grass and lighter line along clean outside edges. A medium-heavy rod gives control, while the exact power should match bait weight and cover thickness.

Best Colors

Green pumpkin is dependable in clearer water. Junebug and black create a stronger silhouette in stained water or shade. White and brighter colors help moving baits stand out when bass are chasing.

Final Hydrilla Plan

Use a chatterbait or swim jig to locate active fish, then slow down with the Sinking Kraken in holes and along edges. Read Best Bass Fishing Baits for Florida for more vegetation patterns.
